Uganda is a developing East African economy that has grown steadily on agriculture and services and stands on the verge of becoming an oil producer as it develops reserves near Lake Albert.
Agriculture employs most of the workforce, and the new oil, to be exported via a pipeline through Tanzania, could be transformative, though corruption and long one-man rule weigh on the country.
Key sectors include agriculture (coffee is the leading export, along with tea and fish), services, gold (much of it re-exported), and soon crude oil from the Lake Albert basin.
