Kosovo is one of Europe's poorest and youngest economies, still building the institutions of a state it declared in 2008. It relies heavily on remittances from a large diaspora and on international assistance.

Unemployment, especially among its very young population, is high and drives emigration, though the economy has grown steadily and Kosovo uses the euro despite not being in the eurozone.

Key Sectors

The economy depends on mining (lignite, lead, zinc, and nickel), agriculture, construction funded by remittances, and a small manufacturing base, with chronic electricity shortages a constraint.
