Ethiopia is extraordinarily diverse, with the Oromo and Amhara the largest of dozens of ethnic groups, a diversity that underpins its ethnic-federal system and its conflicts. Amharic is the federal working language, alongside Oromo and many others.
Religious life is split among Ethiopian Orthodox Christianity, Islam, and Protestant Christianity; Ethiopia was one of the first Christian states and was never colonized.
Ethiopia has a very large, young population and improving but still low development indicators, with ethnic tensions and recurring conflict posing major challenges.
