Omanis are predominantly Arab, with communities of South Asian, East African, and Baluchi heritage reflecting Oman's seafaring past, plus a large expatriate workforce. Arabic is official and English widely used.

Most Omanis follow Ibadi Islam, a distinct branch found mainly in Oman, alongside Sunni and Shia minorities, in a notably tolerant religious climate.

Society

Oman has high literacy and living standards built on oil wealth, having modernized rapidly since 1970 under the late Sultan Qaboos.
