The FSM spans four states and many distinct Micronesian ethnic and linguistic groups across its islands. English is the official and common language, alongside numerous local tongues.

Christianity, divided between Roman Catholic and Protestant denominations, is the dominant faith.

Micronesia has moderate literacy and a small, dispersed population, with significant emigration to the United States and vulnerability to climate change.
