Kazakhstan is multiethnic, with the Kazakh majority — a Turkic, traditionally nomadic people — and a large ethnic Russian minority in the north, a legacy of Soviet settlement. Kazakh and Russian are both widely used.
Most Kazakhs are Sunni Muslim, alongside a substantial Orthodox Christian minority, in a secular state.
Kazakhstan has high literacy and is sparsely populated across an enormous territory, with rising living standards from resource wealth that is unevenly shared.
