Iran has a large, mixed economy dominated by the state and the energy sector, holding some of the world's biggest oil and gas reserves, but it has been hobbled for years by heavy international sanctions over its nuclear program.
Sanctions, isolation from the global financial system, and mismanagement have fueled high inflation and a depreciating currency, though a large, educated population and diversified industry give the economy underlying resilience.
Key sectors include oil and natural gas, petrochemicals, automaking, agriculture, mining and metals, and carpets, with much trade redirected toward China and regional neighbors under sanctions.
