Economy
Haiti is the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere, an economy crippled by chronic political instability, natural disasters, and, more recently, the near-total collapse of state authority amid rampant gang violence.
Dependent on agriculture, remittances, and aid, Haiti has been devastated by catastrophic earthquakes in 2010 and 2021 and by hurricanes, and gangs now control much of the capital, paralyzing the economy.
The economy rests on subsistence agriculture, garment manufacturing for the US market, and above all remittances from the large Haitian diaspora, which dwarf other sources of income.
