Economy
The Gambia is the smallest country on mainland Africa, a poor, narrow economy along its namesake river, dependent on agriculture, tourism, and remittances.
It has worked to rebuild and attract investment since the end of a long dictatorship in 2017, though it remains among the world's poorer nations.
The economy rests on agriculture (groundnuts are the main cash crop), tourism along the Atlantic coast, fishing, and re-export trade, plus remittances from Gambians abroad.
