Fiji's population is divided between Indigenous iTaukei Fijians and a large Indo-Fijian minority descended from indentured laborers, a divide that has shaped its politics. English, Fijian, and Hindi are official languages.
Indigenous Fijians are predominantly Christian (Methodist), while Indo-Fijians are mainly Hindu and Muslim.
Fiji has relatively high literacy for the region and serves as a hub for the South Pacific, though ethnic tensions and vulnerability to climate change and cyclones are ongoing concerns.
