The population is overwhelmingly ethnic Czech, a West Slavic people, with small Slovak, Polish, and other minorities. Czech is the official language.
The Czech Republic is one of the most secular countries in the world; a large share of the population is non-religious, with a Roman Catholic minority.
The country combines high living standards, strong education, and low inequality, though, like much of Europe, it has an aging population sustained partly by immigration from Ukraine and elsewhere.
