Comorans are of mixed African, Arab, and Malagasy heritage, speaking Comorian (related to Swahili), with Arabic and French also official.

Islam, predominantly Sunni, is the state religion and central to Comoran life.

The Comoros has low literacy and incomes and a young, growing population, with many citizens dependent on money sent home from relatives abroad.
