Brunei is a small, very wealthy sultanate on the island of Borneo whose economy is built almost entirely on oil and natural gas, giving its citizens high incomes, free healthcare and education, and no income tax.
This dependence leaves Brunei exposed to energy-price swings and facing the long-term challenge of diversifying before its reserves run down.
The economy is overwhelmingly dominated by crude oil and liquefied natural gas, with modest efforts to develop downstream petrochemicals, halal industries, and tourism.
