Algerians are predominantly Arab-Berber, with the indigenous Amazigh (Berber) identity and language officially recognized alongside Arabic. French remains widely used as a legacy of colonial rule.

Islam, predominantly Sunni, is the state religion and central to national identity.

Society

Algeria has a large, young population and rising education levels, but high youth unemployment and a state-dominated economy have fueled periodic unrest.
