Berlin Crisis 1961

From the time of the Vienna Conference, the world had waited to see what Kruschev would do in Berlin. Kennedy left the conference warning that it would be a "cold winter."

In anticipation, Kennedy called for an increase in defense spending. Finally, on August 13th, the Soviets began erecting the Berlin Wall, dividing East and West Berlin. There was nothing the US could do but look on helplessly.
