Yemen is the poorest country in the Arab world, its economy devastated by a civil war that began in 2014 and a resulting humanitarian catastrophe — among the worst on earth — that has left most of the population dependent on aid.
Years of conflict between the internationally recognized government and the Houthi movement have destroyed infrastructure, split institutions, and collapsed the currency and basic services.
Before the war the modest economy relied on oil and gas, agriculture (including qat), and fishing; conflict has crippled production, leaving the country reliant on humanitarian assistance and remittances.
