Ni-Vanuatu are predominantly Melanesian, and the archipelago is extraordinarily diverse linguistically, with over a hundred languages. Bislama (a pidgin), English, and French are the official languages.
Christianity is the dominant faith, often blended with traditional beliefs and custom (kastom).
Vanuatu has moderate literacy and a young, largely rural population, repeatedly ranked among the world's most disaster-prone nations, yet often cited in surveys as among the happiest.
