Economy
Mauritania is a largely desert economy bridging Arab North Africa and Black West Africa, dependent on iron ore, fishing, and, increasingly, newly discovered offshore gas.
Mining and fishing dominate exports, and the country has significant mineral wealth, though poverty is widespread and it was among the last nations to abolish slavery.
The economy is led by iron ore mining, one of the world's richest Atlantic fishing grounds, gold and copper, and emerging offshore natural gas shared with Senegal.
