Malawi is home to several Bantu ethnic groups, the largest the Chewa. English and Chichewa are the official languages.

Christianity is the dominant faith, with a Muslim minority and traditional beliefs.

Malawi has a very young, fast-growing, and overwhelmingly rural population, with low literacy and incomes and heavy reliance on aid, earning it the nickname 'the warm heart of Africa.'
