I-Kiribati are a Micronesian people, ethnically homogeneous, speaking Gilbertese alongside English. The population is small and spread across widely scattered atolls.

Christianity, divided between Roman Catholic and Protestant denominations, is the dominant faith.

Kiribati has moderate literacy and a young population, but is among the nations most acutely threatened by climate change, with rising seas endangering its very habitability.
