Economy
Greece is a developed, high-income economy dominated by services, above all shipping and tourism — two sectors in which it punches far above its size, as Greek owners control one of the world's largest merchant fleets.
After a severe debt crisis in the 2010s that required international bailouts and harsh austerity, Greece has returned to growth and regained market confidence, though high public debt and the past emigration of skilled workers still weigh on it.
The economy rests on tourism, merchant shipping, food and agriculture (olive oil, wine, and fruit), refined petroleum, and a recovering banking and construction sector.
