Gabon is an upper-middle-income Central African country whose relatively high per-capita income rests on oil, though, as with its neighbors, the wealth is unevenly shared and the economy undiversified.
With a small population and abundant resources, Gabon has higher incomes than most of the region, but declining oil output and inequality have spurred efforts to develop timber, mining, and ecotourism.
The economy is led by oil, with manganese mining (Gabon is a top global producer), timber from its extensive rainforests, and emerging ecotourism.
