Eritrea is home to nine recognized ethnic groups, the largest the Tigrinya and Tigre. There is no single official language, though Tigrinya, Arabic, and English are widely used.
The population is split roughly evenly between Christianity (mainly Eritrean Orthodox) and Islam.
Eritrea has low development indicators and is one of the world's leading sources of refugees, as young people flee indefinite military service and repression.
