Costa Rica

History

Costa Rica became an independent republic in 1838. Democratic elections did not occur until more than 50 years later. While the country has enjoyed a largely peaceful history since 1948 when a brief civil war erupted over the issue of electoral fraud. After the hostilities ceased, the Costa Rican army was abolished. Major government concerns at present revolve around the economy with attempts to reign in government spending.
