Chad is highly diverse, with some 200 ethnic groups, broadly split between a Muslim north and a Christian and animist south. French and Arabic are the official languages.
Islam is the largest faith, followed by Christianity and traditional beliefs, a divide that has shaped its politics and conflicts.
Chad has very low literacy and life expectancy and a young, fast-growing population, beset by poverty, drought, and the burden of hosting refugees from neighboring crises.
