Myanmar is highly diverse, with the Bamar majority and many ethnic minorities — Shan, Karen, Rakhine, and others — several in long-running armed conflict with the center. The Muslim Rohingya of Rakhine State were driven out in a 2017 campaign of ethnic cleansing.

Theravada Buddhism is the dominant faith and central to Bamar identity, with Christian, Muslim, and animist minorities.

Society

Myanmar has moderate literacy but low incomes and, since the coup, deteriorating health, education, and human rights amid widespread fighting and displacement.
