Bulgaria is a developing, upper-middle-income EU member that has modernized substantially since shedding communism in 1989, though it remains among the bloc's lower-income members.
EU membership since 2007 has drawn investment and funds, and the country has pursued adoption of the euro. A growing information-technology and outsourcing sector has emerged alongside traditional industry.
Important sectors include energy and electricity exports, metals and machinery, chemicals, food and wine, tourism along the Black Sea coast, and a fast-expanding IT industry.
