Bosnia's population comprises three constituent peoples: Bosniaks (mainly Muslim), Serbs (mainly Orthodox Christian), and Croats (mainly Catholic), who share a common South Slavic language rendered as Bosnian, Serbian, and Croatian.
The 1992–95 war caused massive displacement along ethnic lines, the effects of which still shape the country's settlement patterns and politics.
Bosnia faces an aging and shrinking population as young people emigrate for work, though literacy is high and the country retains a strong tradition of coexistence in its cities.
