Bhutan is a small, landlocked Himalayan economy famous for measuring progress by 'Gross National Happiness' rather than output alone. It remains largely agrarian but is developing steadily.
Its economy is closely tied to India, which buys the hydroelectric power that is Bhutan's main export and economic engine. Tourism is deliberately limited and high-value to protect the environment and culture.
The economy rests on hydropower exported to India, agriculture and forestry, and high-end tourism, with cement and a nascent technology sector emerging.
