Benin is a small, low-income West African economy based heavily on agriculture, especially cotton, and on trade — much of it informal — with its giant neighbor Nigeria, including significant re-export commerce.
The government has pursued reforms and investment to develop infrastructure and local processing, though poverty remains widespread.
The economy rests on cotton (the main export and a major employer), agriculture, and trade through the port of Cotonou, including re-exports to Nigeria.
