Bahrain is a high-income Gulf economy and the most diversified in the region, having moved beyond its dwindling oil reserves — the first discovered in the Gulf — into finance, services, and industry.
As a regional banking hub and home to the US Fifth Fleet, the small island kingdom relies on services, though it remains financially supported by its larger neighbor, Saudi Arabia.
Key sectors include financial services and Islamic banking, petroleum refining, aluminum smelting (one of the world's largest single-site smelters), and tourism drawing visitors from across the Gulf.
