The Bahamas is a high-income Caribbean archipelago whose prosperity rests on tourism and offshore financial services, drawing millions of visitors, many on cruises, to its islands near Florida.
With tourism and finance dominating and almost everything imported, the economy is highly exposed to US conditions, global travel, and increasingly destructive hurricanes.
The economy is dominated by tourism (the mainstay, including cruise traffic) and offshore banking and financial services, with fishing and salt; there is little agriculture or industry.
