Azerbaijan

Azerbaijanis are a Turkic people, and the population is predominantly Azerbaijani-speaking, with small minorities. A far larger number of ethnic Azeris live across the border in Iran.

The country is majority Shia Muslim but strongly secular, a legacy of Soviet rule.

Azerbaijan has high literacy and a young population, though political freedoms are tightly restricted under a long-ruling family dynasty.
