August 4 - US forces reopens the Abu Gharib prison.

August 6th - Two 1st Armored Division soldiers were killed and one wounded in a small arms fire fight in the Al Rashid district here at approximately 11 p.m. on Aug. 6.

August 13 - Three US soldiers were killed in two different attacks around Baghdad.

August 19th Truck bomb explodes outside United Nations offices in Baghdad, killing 22 people, including Sergio Vieira de Mello, top U.N. envoy in Iraq. UN withdraws from Iraq due to security concerns.

August 29 th - A powerful car bomb went off outside the holiest Shite Shrine in Najaf. A total of 95 people were killed by the bombing including Muhamma Bark Al Hakim a prominent Shite cleric who was openly cooperating with the US.
