The head of the Roman houshold was the paterfafamilias-the leading male. The paterfamilias excersices complete control over the family. Father arranged the marriage of their daughters. In the time or Republic woman had almost legal rights. Later women were able to own property. Divorce became prevelant during the end of the Republic. Girls could marry as early as 12 years old, but the typical girl married at 14.
