The Spanish Civil War provided and ideal testing ground for theories developed on air warfare since World War I. The Luftwaffe of Germany becane actively involved in the war in support of the Franco. They successfully tested the concept of dive bombing. In addition, tactics in fighter interception were developed. The Soviets supplied aircraft and technical assistance to the Republicans.
