September 11 , 2001

Four planes were hijacked by member of the Al Quieda terrorist networks. Two of those planes were crashed into the World Trade Center in New York destroying the two towers and killing thousands. A third aircraft crashed into the Pentagon while the fourth whose target was also Washington DC crash into a field in Pennsylvania after passengers attempted to regain control of the plane. In the immediate aftermath of the attack the US airforce began flying combat air patrols over US cities.
