On August 2, 1990, Iraq invaded and captured Kuwait. The United States was able to assemble a coalition to oppose the invasion rapidly. With the cold war having come to close that coalition included most nations of the world including almost all Arab states including those who like Syria that was not particularly friendly with the United States. The United Nations demanded that Iraq withdraw from Kuwait. When they would not America prepared to force the Iraqis out. The US launched, on the evening of January 17th, an air attack against the Iraqis, followed by a land attack, which dislodged the Iraqis from Kuwait in one of the most lopsided battles of modern times.
