Robert Cavalier LaSalle and a large party of Frenchmen and Indians traveled the entire length of the Mississippi from the Great Lakes to the Gulf of Mexico. On April 9, 1682 they arrived at the Gulf of Mexico and claimed the entire waterway for France.
