1836 Democratic Convention

Baltimore, Maryland

May 20 to 22, 1836

Nominated: Martin Van Buren, of New York for President

Nominated: for Richard M. Johnson of Kentucky for Vice President

The party convention was held a year earlier to insure that the party would support President Jackson candidate Vice President Van Buren. The convention duly unanimously but reluctantly approved the selection. Richard M Johnson who was best known for having shot Tecumseh in the War of 1812 was nominated to be Vice President.
