I was serving with the Canadian army battle group in Somalia in 1992. My platoon was moving up towards Belet Uen to join the battalion. As I was the battalion mortar platoon, I had the only indirect fire support available for 200 miles. At one point I looked up and saw what I think was an Intruder from the USS America. Right there I knew that if we really got into trouble I could get out of it with help from that winged friend. At times I haven't got much use for Americans but that day I couldn't complain. Thanks.

Service Dates=Jan. 1971-Aug. 1972

After boot camp and about 10 days at home I arrived at Norfolk Naval shipyard to the biggest ship I had ever seen. I was assigned to S-4 division for about 3 months then to S-7 division which was the computer divison on ship. I made a lot of frends and had many experences that I will never forget. I just go into computers and found this web site and found out the America was decommision in 1996. Made me just a little sad that a great ship is no longer in service. To any body who served onboard doing the same time I wanted to say "hello".
