Niji, a motor boat built as Wilfreda in 1914 by Essington Ship Building Co., Essington, Pa., was acquired by the Navy from R.B. MeEwan, New York City 21 June 1917 and placed in service the same day.

Operating in the 2nd Naval District, headquartered at Newport during World War I, Niji served on net patrol throughout the war. After war-time service, she was placed out of service and was returned to her owner 21 January 1919.
