The first Whippet (SP-89)—a motorboat built in 1917 by the Greenport Basin & Construction Co. at Greenport, Long Island—was acquired by the Navy on 9 July 1917 from Mr. O. C. Jennings of New York City and was placed in commission on 24 July 1917. Whippet conducted antisubmarine and coastal defense patrols in the 2d Naval District during World War I. On 11 January 1919, she was decommissioned, struck from the Navy list, and returned to her owner.
