Madera APA-244

A county in central California. Madera is a Spanish word meaning "lumber." The county was formed from a part of Fresno County after the building of the town of Madera, which was a lumber center.

The name Madera was assigned to APA-244 on 26 April 1945; but naval acquisition of the Haskell-class attack transport to be built by Oregon Shipbuilding Corp., Portland, Oreg., under a Maritime Commission contract was canceled 27 August 1945.
