The election of 1828 was partially a rematch of the previous election. The contest pitted Jackson against incumbent President Adams. The election pitted an experienced President against a popular war hero from humble beginnings. It was the first election in which there was a popular vote for the President. Jackson received solid support from the Western states, as well as, the South. Adams maintained his support in New England.
