Thomas Jefferson was the third President of the United States. His victory over President Adams represented the first peaceful transition of power as a result of an election. Jeffersons had been elected as a believer in a small government and limited powers of the President. His actions to Purchase the Louisana Territory and his war with the Tripolatin States in fact expanded both.

Jefferson Assumes Power - TThe election of Jefferson was determined by the House of Representatives. When he assumed office he had to deal with the legacy of Federalist control,especially of the Judicary. As a result of the Republican attempt as limiting the judicary the famous decsion of Marbury vs Madison was decided by the Supreme Cout.
The Election of 1800 - President Adams sent envoys to Paris to negotiate the differences with France. When they were not received it was considered almost an act of war 1803 Marbury v. Madison - War was not declared between the Untied States and France, but on the high seas a war did take place.
