The general election campaign began in earnest the day after Senator Kerry swept super Tuesday and became the definative Democratic nominee. The campaign in earnest with each candidate trying to define the opponent. President Bush posited that Senator Kerry was weak on defense and had vacillated on many issues. Senator Kerry claimed the President was an ideologue taking the United States down the wrong path. A controversy developed when the Bush campaign used images of 9/11 in their early ads.
