Religion in the Empire
The rulers of the Ottoman world were Sunni Muslims. The sultans gave religious authority to the ulema, which administered the laws and was responsible for educating Muslims. Non-Muslims were tolerated but required to pay a special head tax. Muslims were not allowed to convert to other religions.
