HistoryCentral · Primary Source & History

The Ottoman standing army was called Janissaries. They revolted when the Sultan ordered a new army formed to replace them. The Spahis who were loyal to Mahmud II put down the revolt. The Spahis together with the Ottoman mob massacred over 6,000 of the Janissaries in their barracks.
