Anthrax Laced Letter Received

On September 18, 2001, a week after the September 11th the first letter containing Anthrax spores were received in the US mail by several news media and two US Senators. Over the course of a few weeks, five people were killed, and 17 others were wounded. The FBI despite one of the most significant investigations in its' history failed to apprehend anyone responsible for the attack.

Starting on September 18th, 2001 only a week after 9.11 a series of letters arrived t the offices of ABC News, CBS News, NBC News, the New York Post and the National Enquirer. All of the letters had anthrax spores on them. Three weeks later letters arrived a the office of Senators, Tom Daschle of South Dakota and Patrick Leahy of Vermont. The letters were postmarked from Princeton New Jersey. Twenty-two people were infected with the Anthrax leading to the death of five people.

The letter to the news media said the following :
09-11-01
THIS IS NEXT
TAKE PENACILIN [sic] NOW
DEATH TO AMERICA
DEATH TO ISRAEL
ALLAH IS GREAT

The second set of letters stated:
09-11-01
YOU CAN NOT STOP US.
WE HAVE THIS ANTHRAX.
YOU DIE NOW.
ARE YOU AFRAID?
DEATH TO AMERICA.
DEATH TO ISRAEL.
ALLAH IS GREAT.

The letters resulted in one of the largest manhunts in US history. After a year Steven Hatfill was who was a scientist and virologist was named as a person of interest. He denied any involvement. Bruce Edward Ivins who had worked at the government's bio labs at Fort Detrick was named as a suspect. He was not charged but committed suicide on August 1, 2008. To this day it has not been proved without question who sent the letters.
